Joseph Stabilito was born in Philadelphia, where he attended the Tyler College of Art in Elkins Park, Pa. The Sande Webster gallery gave him his first show in 1982, after being showcased in the windows of Bonwit Teller, a prominent women's department store. The following year he moved to New York City and found himself at a new and burgeoning East Village art scene. Influenced by that hotbed of creativity, Stabilito has continuously pushed the boundaries of his abstract style using vibrant color, drawing, and inventive shape making. He has had solo shows in Germany, Italy, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Texas, and Boston. He has participated in various group exhibits, including The Grand Palais in Paris in 2026, and the James Cohan gallery, The Edith Blum Art Institute, FIAC in Paris, and Arte Fiera in Bologna.
“My work has deep roots in abstract expressionism. Every painting is a conversation with color and shape. I work intuitively, giving myself permission to experiment with new ideas and concepts. I’m impressed by everything I see… the branching of trees, the beauty of flowers, and the intricacy of networks. Color is a huge part of my thinking. What combinations would be surprising or exciting? I consider composition, texture, and the interplay of surface and depth. Mistakes are part of the process, and although painful, working through them can lead to amazing discoveries”. Reviews have been published in Art in America, Architectural Digest, and more.
